small idea: we all have cognitive dashboards
what is on yours, and how does it change when you're hanging out with someone?
A small idea...
an individual's cognitive "affordances" can be mapped and placed onto what you might call a "cognitive dashboard"...
you could also say that these are "cognitive options", or options that are available/likely to appear in cognition.
1) some people do very little self-prompting, so their "dashboard" is relatively static from moment to moment or day to day; others do a huge amount of self-prompting, and they intentionally vary their dashboard wildly by "introspecting" or "journaling" or "meditating" (or a variety of cognitive tools).
They are of course able to do that, because those self-prompting tools are themselves present on the "default" cognitive dashboard, even when they are alone.
2) An interesting phenomenon is that this cognitive dashboard is dramatically changed in the presence of other people, and in the presence of unusual social prompts.
3) I'm particularly interested in the idea that our dashboards are changed in social contexts; when we are surrounded by people, our cognition changes, our cognitive tools change, and we are essentially “using” each other to enhance our cognition!
For instance, this "forcing party" idea by Tyler went wildly viral. Why? I suspect people have some intuition that they would finally feel cognitively CAPABLE of solving a lot of their problems in life.
Another viral tweet from Tyler was about having someone in your life who "forces you" to do the stuff that is "good for you" (and many people commented saying: "my guy, that is a spouse"). Again, people have some intuition that the purpose of a spouse is to enhance the thoughts you are capable of thinking, and the actions you are capable of doing.
4) what happens to our cognitive dashboard when we are scrolling on social media?
5) what happens to our cognitive dashboard when we are walking through nature?
6) what happens to our cognitive dashboard when we are sprinting?
7) what are the most important affordances to install on MORE cognitive dashboards in a community of supercoordinators? what is the fastest way to install that affordance?
